Pipeline:
Applying
A lot of people are interested in this program. However, not all will be successful, even at the first stages of applying. One must first be able to pass the medical check up, which is stringent. Hypobaric chambers, blood work, eye tests etc. A Class 2 medical will then be awarded. That is basically a Private pilot’s medical. Only after that will one be allowed to continue.
Ground School
Basic aerodynamics, aircraft systems and familiarisation with the Diamond DA-40 will be taught here. You will learn & become really good friends with something called the Pilot’s Operating Handbook. Normal procedures, a little of abnormal and emergency procedures will be covered. This is everything leading up to the first flight!
Basic Flying Course Phase 1
Once you have passed Ground School, this is where the flying begins! Phase 1 covers the absolute basics of flight. Take off, Departure, Straight & Level. Turning, Climbing & Descending, Stalling and Landing. Most of the manoeuvres will be done in the designated training area, around Central Singapore. These are fundamental handling skills needed to fly the plane. Also included, is radio communications (i.e. how to talk to Air Traffic Control & other aircrafts), and a little of emergency procedures. This stage consists of around 6-7 flights, after which comes the first of many progress check flights.
Basic Flying Course Phase 2
Once you have passed Phase 1, Phase 2 starts. Phase 2’s focus is about circuits and some refresher training area flights. Once circuits are completed and your instructor has confidence in you, he/she will authorise you for your first SOLO flight! This is a milestone for every single pilot in the world. He/she will leave the plane in your hands, you will complete a circuit & return for landing. It is common to get dunked with a concoction of many liquids to celebrate this milestone! After your first solo, there would be another progress check flight again, to the PPL stage.
PPL phase
If you have passed both progress check flights, congratulations! You are amongst a few “survivors” of your course. Take a moment to relish in the accomplishment but moving on, you are now expected to demonstrate the skills you have learnt so far and more. Abnormal, Emergency situations would be what you will learn and perfect next. You will study & sit for the 7 PPL papers, and build flight hours to take the PPL Flight Test. The PPL Flight Test will test you on everything to deem you worthy of PIC status. A wing ceremony will then be organised to wing the newly minted private pilots.
